Newham Fabians AGM 2011

Picture is from Newham Fabians AGM which took place at the Town Hall in East Ham on Monday evening. The Fabians are an independent socialist society affiliated to the Labour Party.

The Guest speaker was local MP Stephen Timms (main picture).  He spoke about the role of the Fabians in the current climate.

I missed most of the meeting due to a clash.  When I came in there was a robust but comradely debate going on about possible past mistakes and the future direction of the Party.  Very Fabian!  Stephen then had to leave in order to go to the House of Commons to vote against the Tories (to loud cheers from one and all).

It had been a very positive and constructive Labour Movement meeting.  A local MP, Councillors, trade unionists, (a former MEP) and Party activists meeting up together to exchange views and progress Labour politics.

Many thanks to Tower Hamlets Labour Party activist and photographer, Dan MCCurry, for the excellent photos.  They really bring the event to life. Check out his "Newham Fabians" FaceBook album here.

Shouldn’t it be Annual meeting as in only ever meets when it has to?

Aren't AGM's usually annual meetings?

No more elected Mayors. Get Robin Wales out!

methinks the key issue here is..."elected". Robin is the most popular Politian in Newham. Elected time and again by massive majorities.

Get use to it.

Indeed, a massive majority in 2010. But look at what he was up against - a Tory no-one had heard of, someone who proposed to govern based on the word of Jesus, and two nutters beamed down from the planet Zarg.

The Liberals, the Greens and Respect didn't even run candidates.

Labour could have put up anyone - even John! - and won a landslide, so I wouldn't be too sure about 'The Most Popular Politician in Newham' tag.

In a democracy the figures speak for themselves. How many other politians won 68% of the vote?

I'm not challenging the fact that he won, or that he won big. I'm just providing a little context.

And FYI, Stephen Timms got 70.4% of the vote in East Ham, so maybe he should be Newham's Most Popular Politician if that's your criteria.

Stephen Timms is the most popular politician in East Ham. But East Ham is not Newham. Lyn in West Ham has not been an MP as long as Stephen but she had a simply fantastic result as well.

BUT you cannot get around the fact that Robin is the most popular politician in Newham. If you had ever bothered to go on the doorstep for any Party you would realise that people like him and what he has done.

So get real and stop the pointless whining.
